Adoption

Adoption is the process of substituting one or both of parents for another. After the adoption is complete, the new parents are the only parents recognized by the law and have the same rights and responsibilities as any other parents. If you are interested in building your family through adoption, or considering surrendering your parental rights then contact an adoption attorney at Widrig Law PLLC.

Termination of rights can be voluntary or involuntary. By consenting to the child’s adoption the birth parent voluntarily terminates his or her parental rights. An involuntary termination of parental rights can occur for several reasons. Speak to the Tennessee adoption lawyers at Widrig Law PLLC to find out more details.

After the rights are terminated then the child or children can be adopted. There are several forms of adoptions.

Stepparent Adoptions

A very common form of adoption is stepparent adoption. This is a very common form of adoption because in a stepparent adoption one of the biological parents has gotten remarried to someone else, and in that choice they are accepting the responsibility of the child as their own. In most cases the stepparent has already been a major part in the child’s life and the adoption to become a stepparent is a legal formality.

International Adoption

International adoption is when a couple or person looks overseas to adopt a child. This is more commonly seen today than in years past.

How Long Does an Adoption Take and What is the Cost?

It could take a few weeks to a few years. One of the first steps in the process is getting the home study done. This is accomplished through a licensed child-placing agency or a licensed clinical social worker. The cost of adoption can range from $0 to several thousand dollars depending on the circumstances.
